The Asolo Repetorie Theater story is rich in history both in our community and abroad. Each season more than 100,000 people attend the Asolo’s diverse repertoire of theater experiences.
Historically, Asolo began in 1960 when the faculty of Florida State University started a summer acting company in
Sarasota, which performed in the Ringling Museum's Historic Asolo Theater and soon became known as the
Asolo Theatre Festival. Over the years, its has grown both in stature and popularity. By 1989, the company had outgrown the Historic Asolo at the Ringling
and dedicated a new building – Asolo Center for the Performing Arts.
Today, one of the most impressive parts of the Theater is the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training program, an integral part of Asolo Rep. Every year, twelve talented students are accepted as candidates for the Masters degree and enter a rigorous three-year program
that culminates in roles on the mainstage. Classroom work, a full season on the Cook Stage, and a study
trip to London all comprise the acting curriculum. Special opportunities with experts in musical theatre,
stage combat, and vocal technique round out the offerings of a world-class faculty and the mentoring by a
professional acting company.
