Sarasota Ballet founder Jean Weidner’s dream was to establish a professional ballet company that
would be the pride of Sarasota. Now, twenty years later, her vision has blossomed through the seasons
into an exceptional company of dancers with great talent and artistry.
The Sarasota Ballet is the Gulf Coast of Florida’s first and only professional ballet company. Under the Direction of Iain Webb, the Sarasota Ballet
has expanded its repertoire to include works by world renowned choreographers such as Sir Frederick Ashton, Dame Ninette de Valois, Antony Tudor, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Robert North,
John Cranko, Hans van Manen, Andre Prokovsky, Matthew Bourne and Dominic Walsh.
Recently, dance and theatre critic for the New York Times Alastair Macaulay noted “...the Sarasota Ballet (in its 18th year, and directed since
2007 by Iain Webb) has suddenly become America’s foremost exponent of Ashton ballets.”
Resident Choreographer Dominic Walsh began dancing in Elgin, Illinois with Lisa Boehm. He joined Houston Ballet in 1989 and danced there until 2004. He was promoted to Principal Dancer by 1996. He has danced with major companies around the globe, receiving praise from national and international critics.
Most recently, Dominic Walsh premiered Titus Andronicus. Since founding his company, Mr. Walsh continues to grow as a dancer and had the opportunity to perform the American premiere of Mauro Bigonzetti's Pression. Most recently, he danced Jirí Kylián's only solo for a man, Double You,
and the White Swan pas de deux from Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. Walsh received his second Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography for Amadeus in 2007 and in July 2008, he won a Princess Grace Award for Choreography for Mozart.
